Battle of Collierville 150 Symposium Lectures

"Perspectives on the Civil War in West Tennessee" brought together scholarly persepctives to provide new insights into the unique experience of living in West Tennessee during the Civil War.

 

Dr. Carroll Van West, "Rivers, Rails, and the War in West Tennessee"

Dr. West set the stage for discussion of the Civil War in the region, with an emphasis on the importance of railroads.
 

Myers Brown, "Clothing and Equipping Forrest's Men"

 Mr. Brown explored the material culture of the Confederate cavalry.

 

Dr. Timothy Smith, "Difficult and Broken Ground: The Terrain Factor at Shiloh" 

Dr. Smith discussed West Tennessee's most significant wartime event, the Battle of Shiloh.

 

Dr. Gary Edwards, "Slavery and Southern Nationalism Among the Common Soldiers of Western Tennessee" 

Dr. Edwards used postbellum memoirs to reconstruct the views about slavery among yeoman-soldiers.
